A story set in late 1800's Quebec, during the industrial revolution, When We Lost Our Heads follows the lives of two young girls as they grow from adolescents to adults. It's a classic tale of two beautiful girls - one blond, bubbly and rich - the other dark haired, macabre and born to a family faking wealth. This is where the traditional tale of bewitchment, friendship and love takes an unexpected turn. The girls initial connection is an immediate friendship between two children who are desperately seeking the attachment their mothers never provided. A startling event separates the girls and forever changes their life paths.
This book deals with pornography, gender & sexual identity, as well as feminism, in a transparent way, spoiler alert - the details are pretty graphic. I didn't think that the subject matter was written in an intentionally shocking manner, but I was reading the book for book club and I didn't really know what I was getting myself into, and it was surprising for a book set in that time period to take a pornographic twist. No definable hero was the chief complaint about this book from my fellow book club members. There were a couple of likable characters along the way, but I never felt any kinship to any of the ladies in the cast.
